Joey's Reserve

So, who is Joey?

Joey was my dog. One of his greatest qualities was his love for other dogs and cats. He lovingly snuggled with the other dogs and kitties of our household. But when it was playtime, he loved to engage the other dogs in a good chase, or some wrestling. He extended this fondness to his four-legged friends as well.  His playful spirit even helped me heal one of my most special patients.

Teddy was a sweet little Pomeranian who came to me unable to stand up and do anything (you can find his photo on our website too). He could barely eat on his own. His body was limp and weak from having been poisoned. His liver and nervous systems were shutting down, and his will to live was dwindling quickly despite the intensive medical care he was receiving. His prognosis was terrible, and we were running out of medical options. However, my intuition told me not to give up. In the hospital, Teddy was sad and depressed. With his family’s permission, I decided to treat him at home, and let him meet Joey.  I knew from his “mom” how much Teddy loved to play with other dogs. Maybe my Joe could help.

Joey was always checking on Teddy. Anytime I took Teddy outside to help him use the bathroom, Joey would try to get him to play. Over several days, with each trip out for fresh air and a potty break, Teddy was able to do increasingly more as he tried harder and harder to race and play with Joey. Joey would play-bow and then bounce a few feet away, then turn and look at Teddy as if to say, “Come on, I know you can do it…..chase me!”  Then he would be back to encourage Teddy with a gentle nudge.  Joey remained enthusiastic at every request for Teddy to join him. Soon enough, Teddy was able to stand and romp a very unsteady romp…..sometimes tumbling head over heels trying to keep up. When he finally went home to his family, he was walking on his own, and he could even run a little before taking a tumble. Once home with his own family, Teddy made a full recovery with their encouragement and tender loving care.

Joey helped Teddy stay on this side of the Rainbow Bridge when they were both youngsters. Now, they are having the grandest of time there running, racing and wrestling with each other and all their friends while they patiently wait for their people.

I wanted you to know Joey, not just for the amazing thing he did for his friend Teddy, but also to have an opportunity to see who he was and why I loved him so dearly. I think you will enjoy getting to know him through his video. And I hope you will donate to Joey’s Reserve in honor of him and to assist pet parents in need. Thank you.
